What’s A Grenade Worth?

Posted by mercutiom On January - 15 - 2010

Grenades are decent anti-personnel weapons and one would assume that they would be worth using against the zombie hordes.  However, this is not the case.  When it comes to the undead, grenades are next to worthless.

A grenade works as a shrapnel scattering weapon.  The explosive inside detonates and forces the metal casing away from its center.  The shrapnel tears into the flesh of the nearby victim causing excessive damage and pain.  Against the live human, the grenade is a pretty good weapon.

Against the zombies, however, that damage and pain just don’t matter.  Yes, damaging the flesh of the zombies is always helpful, especially if you can knock out their legs and/or arms.  The damage caused by a grenade, usually, is minimal to the undead.  The shrapnel tears at their body, but rarely does the necessary damage to stop their onslaught.

As for the pain factor, zombies don’t feel pain, so the fact that they have a burning hot piece of metal tearing through their gut or muscle just doesn’t effect them the same way it would you or I.  There is the possibility of the flying metal piercing the brain cavity and killing the zombie, but the chances are so minimal as to be considered impossible.

So if you do happen to have a cache of grenades don’t bother to use them against the zombies.  Instead keep them as backup in case you’re attacked by other humans.  Or, if you have a bomb expert about, take out the explosive center and use that for whatever purposes you deem worthy.
