There are a couple of things I'd like to point out here. First off a handgun, while convenient to carry owing to it's small size and light weight, is one of the more difficult types of firearms to learn how to use for a beginning shooter. Due to their relatively short barrels they are also less effective than carbines of the same calibers in terms of range, terminal effect and to an extent mechanical accuracy. Handguns may also be more difficult to procure in some parts of the western world. Frankly I would only recommend handguns to those trained in their use and as a backup to a more practical weapon. I tend to place them in the same category as shotguns; useful for certain situations, but far from a primary all-around weapon.

In a close quarters engagement it's also important to note that holding a handgun at full extension puts the muzzle out further than submachineguns and some carbines, making it that much harder to clear out small rooms or tag zombies from inside a vehicle. To someone with little practical shooting experience gearing up for the zombpocalypse I'd recommend a pistol caliber carbine or small caliber (no shortage of .223 out there), short barreled, auto-loading rifle. Not much more complex mechanically, easier to learn to use effectively and more innately capable than a handgun in most respects.
