Handguns And The Undead

Posted by mercutiom On November - 17 - 2009

The handgun is one thing that everyone should have close at…uh…hand…when dealing with the zombie threat.  But as with the shotgun, they should not be your weapon of choice.

Handguns are excellent for close up encounters with the undead, but only extreme experts have the accuracy to use them at the long ranges suggested when dealing with a zombie threat.  We recommend you purchase at least one, and preferably several.  They are relatively light weight, ammo is standardized, and there isn’t a great deal of training needed to understand the basics of use.

Here are the 5 handguns we recommend:

  • Glock 19C Compact Compensated:  Easy to handle and ideal for versatile use through reduced dimensions compared with the standard pistol size. With the proven caliber of 9×19, it has found worldwide distribution in security services. In addition to being used as a conventional service weapon, it is suitable as a backup weapon. For instance, many of the elite pilots of the USAF trust the GLOCK 19 for their efficient defense in outbreak situations.  The Compensator pistols are equipped with an integrated compensator, rendering the weapon even more controllable during rapid fire and allowing an improved hit pattern. The compensator consists of two longitudinal openings in the barrel and slide of the pistol arranged in “V-position”. This minimizes front sight blackening through powder gases.
  • Beretta 92FS 9mm Blue:  From the jungle heat of Panama to the sandstorms of Iraq, the U.S. Armed Forces have counted on Beretta pistols for almost two decades of distinguished service. Accurate out of the box, this workhorse features an open slide design that virtually eliminates jamming, a safety system that combines decocking with a positive thumb safety, and a combat muzzle crown. Beretta’s proprietary black, non-glare Bruniton finish gives your 92FS a wear-resistant coating, which means it will stand up to any special duty and is less likely to attract the eye of a nearby zombie.
  • Colt Delta Elite 10mm:  The Colt Delta Elite pistol had been a favorite amongst combat shooters, and offered the power to hunt medium size game, including the undead, in the legendary M1911-style pistol. The Delta Elite 10mm offers near 41 Magnum ballistics in a semi-automatic pistol.  Features such as Wrap Around Rubber Grips with Delta Medallions, White Dot Sights, Arched Main-Spring Housing, Combat Hammer, and 80 Series Firing System give the Delta Elite the winning combination of proven capability, endurance and classic appearance that is sure to appeal to zombie assassins and undead refugees alike.
  • Sig P556 SWAT Pistol:  The Sig P556 SWAT features a 10” military grade cold hammer forged barrel, chambered in 5.56mm NATO, with a twist rate of 1 in 7”. The flash suppressor uses a standard .5 x 28 TPI thread pattern, ensuring compatibility with after-market accessories. The optional flip up front combat sight is adjustable for windage, rear for elevation. The receiver is made of high strength steel with a durable wear-resistant Nitron® finish. The Picatinny rail features a SIG SAUER® Mini Red Dot sight that works in concert with the optional front combat sight. The trigger housing is machined from an aircraft grade aluminum alloy forging with a hard-coat anodized finish designed to survive extreme conditions. The P556 SWAT features a aircraft aluminum quad-rail designed for mounting accessories. The P556 SWAT comes equipped with a smooth two-stage trigger, ambidextrous safety and is designed to accept standard AR magazines. The pistol ships standard with (1) 30-round magazine. The P556 SWAT is compatible with M16/AR-15 type magazines.
  • Walther PPS 9mm Black:  The PPS packs in more power. All in all, the PPS embodies both the legendary quality and tradition of innovation that make it a great pistol.  PPS is also a large caliber in a small frame giving it the stopping and brain exploding power you need.

You should be able to pick up any and all of these handguns in you local gun club.  Most states don’t even have a waiting period for the purchase of handguns.

So get out there and start stocking up.  The zombie threat could be at your door tonight.

  1. Nick Said,

There are a couple of things I’d like to point out here. First off a handgun, while convenient to carry owing to it’s small size and light weight, is one of the more difficult types of firearms to learn how to use for a beginning shooter. Due to their relatively short barrels they are also less effective than carbines of the same calibers in terms of range, terminal effect and to an extent mechanical accuracy. Handguns may also be more difficult to procure in some parts of the western world. Frankly I would only recommend handguns to those trained in their use and as a backup to a more practical weapon. I tend to place them in the same category as shotguns; useful for certain situations, but far from a primary all-around weapon.

In a close quarters engagement it’s also important to note that holding a handgun at full extension puts the muzzle out further than submachineguns and some carbines, making it that much harder to clear out small rooms or tag zombies from inside a vehicle. To someone with little practical shooting experience gearing up for the zombpocalypse I’d recommend a pistol caliber carbine or small caliber (no shortage of .223 out there), short barreled, auto-loading rifle. Not much more complex mechanically, easier to learn to use effectively and more innately capable than a handgun in most respects.
