Communication After The Outbreak
Communication between groups and even individuals is going to be very difficult after the Zombie Outbreak. Cell phones will not work, the Internet will go down, even the mail will fail to be delivered. All of this will happen within weeks (if not days) after the outbreak begins.
Yes, there will still be satellites up there, and some communication will be able to be maintained through them, but they too will fail eventually. From that point on communication will fall back on the individual.
So what is the best means of communicating to others after the zombies come? Obviously our ability to speak will be one of the main ways with whatever group of unturned you find yourself with. But you will need to plan for those times you come across other groups and individuals, and how you plan to converse with them. Remember, you will want to keep them at a safe distance at your first encounter, both to ensure your safety, and theirs.
There is one obvious option. Yelling. Over relatively short distances, yelling at each other will work to allow you to discuss your desires, terms, etc.
Say, though, you need to communicate over large distances, where the human voice simply will not carry. There are two more simple options, one for big communication displays, and another for more private conversations.
The first option is through smoke signals. Once the cities have burned and the air has cleared, the ability to use smoke signal communication over great distances (for warnings especially) will return. The second option is the heliograph. A heliograph is nothing more than a mirror aimed to reflect the sun.
Using this mirror you can speak in Morse (or whatever) code to talk to groups over miles and convey very precise orders, warnings, and messages. So if you’re not up on your Morse code, then we recommend you jump to the article on Wikipedia and start learning. Don’t forget to practice reading it too.
