Automatic Or Semi-Automatic, Which Is Best For Fending Off Zombies
When it comes to killing a zombie horde, what’s better; a single shot or a hail of lead flying through the air? Well, it might surprise some to find out that, when faced with the flesh eating undead, the single shot is the better option, regardless of the number of walking corpses headed your way.
Yes, when dealing with the zombies there’s one thing you want above all else in your weapon, and that’s control. A semi-automatic weapon, one that fires a single shot each time the trigger is pulled, is preferred highly over those that fire multiple times per pull, known as automatic weapons. The reason for this is simple physics.
It is a case of of Newton’s Third Law of Motion: Whenever a first body exerts a force F on a second body, the second body exerts a force -F on the first body. F and -F are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. Or simply: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
This means when a weapon is fired (semi-automatic, or fully automatic) the pressure of the bullet leaving the barrel forces the gun backward. Since there is usually an arm holding the weapon the backward motion is transferred to the side and up. So for every bullet leaving the barrel the person holding the weapon needs to correct for that motion in order for the next bullet in line to hit its target.
When using an automatic weapon, the bullets come out too fast for a human to correct accurately for. The next bullet leaving the weapon adds to the upward and side-ward motion causing less and less accuracy. With a semi-automatic weapon, the person can take time to correct for this motion, aim, and fire accurately again.
Some would claim that having more lead out in the air is better, but if those shots aren’t accurately fired, then they might as well be wasted. Remember, the only way to ensure the death of a zombie is to destroy its brain. If the automatic fire is penetrating the shoulders, necks, arms, torsos, etc. of the oncoming horde it’s useless. A zombie can continue attacking as long as the head is attached. Unless you’re using an extremely high caliber bullet, a single shot will not detach the head, even if the neck is hit several times, something highly unlikely when using an automatic weapon.
There is another claim that using a tripod or vehicle mounted automatic weapon adds to stabilization and allows for more accurate head shots in a large group. We ask those supporting this claim to take a walk in a large crowd sometime. How many people do you see whose heads line up at the same height. The range of human heights differs by nearly a foot on average. So even if you are able to stabilize a weapon your shots aren’t guaranteed to hit the brain of every undead monster.
The best way to ensure you get accurate head shots every time, is to use a weapon that allows you to aim each and every shot. The semi-automatic falls into this group. So when you’re out there rummaging through what’s left of your city after the outbreak, and you have a choice of weapons, choose the right one.
